Prom!

The last month has been way fun! And I had Prom! Which is like the most American thing EVER! So first of all I will tell you about that. Honestly that’s basically the only real fun thing I did this past month haha besides going to grandma in Rexburg and hangout with people over there. School is still the same, everyday… Anyways it was just a normal day at school for me. And I was in 4^th hour, my horticulture class, just planting some plants and flowers when a guy came in and told me I needed to go to the office. The office is just the place where the ‘school secretary’ works and the principals office is etc. People have to come there all the time for certain things idk what, not always the good things haha. But the guy told me there was a police officer for me, and first I thought it was for Drivers Ed or something because the police officers came over all the time in that class. So I didn’t expect something really big. He told me to come in the principals office to talk about certain things. Well alright… first he just asked me normal things about how I liked Idaho, what country I came from etc. Eventually he asked me if I had my passport with me, well no, I don’t bring my passport to school. Than he started to tell me about how I had to go to the courthouse before the end of the month or I could be send home and stuff. So I just sat there like what in the world is he talking about? When I was about to interrupt him and say; So what exactly do you want me to do? He gave me a paper that looked pretty serious and he told me to read it from the beginning. Eventually I saw the word prom and the name of the guy who asked me and I started laughing. It all finally made sense, because it was all so weird! Of course I was in shock too haha! Well eventually everybody walked into the principals office and the guy had a little sign and some candy that he gave me. I gave him a hug and said thank you haha. But it was kind of embarrassing too though because I had no idea what was going on and I just sat there like wtf. But at least I’ll never forget it ha! The guy that asked me is way fun and super hilarious! So I was happy he asked me and not somebody else.

But the girls have to answer ‘yes’ in a ‘special way’ too. And it took me forever to think of something. Because I kind of wanted it to do in a funny way like he asked me, with the police officer etc. But he’d probably know. So eventually I wrote on a big paper “I’d travel the world to go to prom with you” but than in Dutch, so I printed out a list of English – Dutch translated words to find the translation! And gave him some candy + stroopwafels (dutch waffle cookies). Prom self was on a Saturday, what Americans do, you’ll go with a whole group and do something fun during the day, so we went laser gaming with a whole bunch of people and after that we went home to get ready in all our prom dresses and we’d go out for dinner. We were with a lot of people! But it looked way cool, everybody in those huge big dresses! I wish we had those things back home, just the whole American school system with the whole school spirit etc. Prom itself was in this ‘church’, it was not really a church, only from the outside but from the inside it was like a big house. It looked pretty cool. Prom was until 00:00 and after that everybody just went home.

We didn’t really have more important things in school the past weeks. The only thing was Unity Day, it was a day where we didn’t have class and we just did games with the whole school. It was so much fun! Those things would have never happened in school back home. You just go to school to study for your future and that’s it.

Anyways, here, we only have 18 days left of school before summer vacation starts. After those 19 days I have two weeks of summer left, to go and do fun stuff and after that I will go home. Kind of sad how fast the time went by. But if I look back at all the things I have learnt and how much my English has improved. This is definitely one of the best decisions I have made in my life. 12 months in another country has been hard, but also a lot of fun. You learn how to be independent and see how other people live. You start appreciating your home country more and you will start missing the weirdest things. I became an expert in packing suitcases and flying to all these different places by myself. All the different airports and different people I meet all the time, all the exchange students I meet everywhere from each country become your friend so easily because they are going through the same thing as you are going through and nobody else knows how that feels.

Traveling is definitely the only thing you buy that makes you richer.

School and Springbreak

Counting down the last 2 months, time is going way too fast… I already got my flight times from EF. Flying on June 10 from Idaho Falls to Denver, Denver to Chicago and from Chicago to Amsterdam. But first 2 more months here! So it’s been a while since I wrote on my blog. In school we’re already in the last, 3^rd trimester, so which means; I have some new classes. First hour is Physical Science, Seminary, desktop publishing (so boring, we just work with adobe photoshop and stuff) than we have lunch and after that I have a class called Horticulture, it’s a class with plants and flowers. It’s kind of nice, since we don’t do a lot,

just hangout and planting some plants haha. Last hour is World Languages, that hour I’m learning French. Can’t remember a lot from the 3 years of French I had in high school back home, but it’s ok. I don’t do sports after school anymore. At the beginning I debated if I wanted to do softball or track. But it just takes so much time and you can’t miss any of the practices otherwise you will be sitting on the bench during games.

We didn’t really have a lot of special things going on in school the past few weeks. The only thing was Junior Miss. It’s a pageant ‘show’ for the girls in my class and they can win scholarship for college with it. It was kinda funny to watch since we would never have that in highschool haha. And we only know it from television like Toddlers and Tiaras ha! The week after that there was the same thing but than for guys ‘Mr West Jeff’, it’s not really serious, they just do it to make fun of the girls in Junior Miss.

So it’s April now and the weather is really weird, some days there is still snow and some days it feels like spring with 18C. So I went skiing one more time in the ski area that’s called:  Grand Targee! It’s pretty big and popular around here since people are coming skiing from allover America over there! Last weekend we had spring break, we only had Friday and Monday off since we already had 2 weeks of Spudharvest in October. Anyways, EF wanted to go on a trip to Utah to go indoor skydiving but eventually there were not enough people who wanted to go, so my host mom, Summer, decided that we could go without EF and stay the weekend in Salt Lake city. We took the Norwegian exchange student from my school with us, Grammy (summer’s mom) plus my little sister Brooklyn. We left Saturday morning and went to Ogden, Utah where iFly was with the indoor skydiving. It was so cool!!! It just makes up my mind every time how cheap America is, for the whole skydiving thing they charged us only $30. In Europe we probably would have paid hundreds of euro’s haha. So we got in to iFly and the instructors explained us how it would work. So we got on some special ‘suits’ with wind goggles and earplugs. When we were ready, we would go and sit around the ‘wind tunnel’ first the instructor showed us some cool tricks (that we couldn’t do, lol). A few people in front of me were first. When it was my turn I had to stand at the opening of the wind tunnel and kind of jump into the wind tunnel. It felt so weird, but it was way fun!! You just kind of flew around and the instructor would help.

After iFly we went to in-and-out Burger, definitely my favorite fast food in america, it’s so much better than McDonalds or Burger king or whatever! Around 01:00 PM we went to Salt Lake City and we would stay the night there. Salt Lake is like the ‘Mecca’ of the LDS religion haha. So they have the biggest temple over there with a big visitors center, since me, and Ilse (from Norway) are not LDS we can’t go into the temple. So on temple square we went looking for missionaries from our own country. Mormons, have to go on a mission for 2 years where they have to teach the gospel to others and they can be placed all over the world. So we found 2 missionaries from Norway, one of them lived in the same place as Ilse back home and she knew her sister! So that was a crazy coincidence! Of course, there was nobody from The Netherlands, which didn’t really surprise me, because I never heard of the whole LDS, Mormon religion before I came here. Eventually we found a girl from Bolivia who lived for 5 years in The Netherlands and she spoke Dutch! I think as an Exchange student far from home, nothing is better to talk with somebody who knows your language and culture; I haven’t met any exchange students from my country since the beginning of the year in Boston. It was actually really hard to speak my own language again, of course I talk Dutch with friends and family but it’s really hard to talk to somebody you don’t know in your own language again haha! Salt lake city was so busy, because there was General Conference. General Conference is twice a year, and it’s a big Mormon thing, where big leaders talk. There are 4 sessions from each two hours. Two sessions are on Saturday and two on Sunday. The one on Sunday morning is the most popular. You need tickets to get in (tickets are free) but it is really popular and you can fit 21.000 people in the conference center. So on Sunday morning we went, and seriously I have never seen so many Mormons in my whole entire life, all dressed up in suits and dresses haha.

But since we didn’t have tickets we couldn’t go in. There are seriously people standing on the streets begging for tickets, well we decided not to do that so we ended up in stand by line. So when everybody is in they will give us the tickets that are left. We never thought we would get in, but at the end there were around a couple of 100 tickets left, so we got in. I seriously never saw my host mom so happy; she even gave the guy from the security a hug haha, it was hilarious!! She definitely makes this year so much better haha! The conference center was huge!! And there were so many people! After conference we went back to the hotel and picked up grammy and Brooklyn, ate lunch and went back to Idaho! It was such a fun little spring break! (:

CALIFORNIA

Eindelijk!! Californiaaaa! Echt geweldig. Vrijdag avond zijn we naar oma gegaan in Rexburg, daar sliepen we ook omdat we zaterdag ochtend al vroeg naar het vliegveld moesten en Anna ging ook mee want die ging op een andere ‘discoverytour’ van EF. Mijn vlucht was om 07:45 ’s ochtends naar Salt Lake, Utah. Vanaf daar vloog ik naar San Fransisco. De tour die ik deed heet “The California Coast” met San Fransisco, Santa Barbara en Los Angeles. Op het vliegveld kwam ik al mede Exchange students die dezelfde tour deden als ik. Dus kon daar mooi mee samen vliegen. Eenmaal in San Fransisco aangekomen stonden er 2 EF begeleiders te wachten, 2 meisjes van ongeveer 29 jaar. Die brachten ons naar de rest van de groep. Er waren al wat meerdere eerder aangekomen en iedereen moest op elkaar wachten. Dus we zaten op een gegeven moment met een hele grote groep in de aankomst hal. In totaal 45 exchange students met 11 verschillende nationaliteiten. Duitsland, Zweden, Noorwegen, Denemarken, Zwitserland, Oostenrijk, Italië, Spanje, Thailand, Taiwan en Nederland. Ofcourse was ik de enige Nederlander haha. Na met wat verschillende mensen gepraat te hebben gingen we naar een grote bus. En dat was onze bus ook voor de hele week. We gingen meteen San Fransisco in en we kregen een uur vrije tijd op Union Square in downtown San Fransisco. Daarna hadden we dinner in een restaurant vlak bij! Na die tijd gingen we allemaal in de bus, over de golden gate bridge naar het hotel (eindelijk). Iedereen was zo moe! We kregen een kamer indeling van onze begeleiders. Om op deze manier iedereen beter te leren kennen. Ik zat ingedeeld met 2 meisjes uit Taiwan en 1 meisje uit Duitsland. Prima, kon het er wel goed mee vinden. Toch blijft de Aziatische cultuur anders dan de Europese ;)

We moesten allemaal al weer aanwezig zijn in de lobby van het hotel rond 08:20. Het weer was regenachtig helaas, maar we gingen in de bus naar 1 of ander park met museum, wat een heel mooi uitzicht had op San Fransisco, maar omdat het nogal regenachtig en mistig was, was er niet heel veel te zien. Daarna gingen we naar China Town wat wel heel leuk was. We gingen naar een “fortune cookie factory”. Interessant om te zien. Daarna hadden we vrije tijd in China town voor lunch wat echt heel leuk was. We gingen echt met een grote groep (15) naar een chinees restaurant voor lunch, wat de eigenaren van het restaurant heel erg leuk vonden, we waren dan ook van harte welkom geheten aangezien we met zoveel mensen waren haha. We kregen een grote ronde tafel in het zogenaamde ‘VIP’ gedeelte van het restaurant haha. We hadden 1 of ander combi menu met allemaal kip gerechten besteld waar iedereen dan van kon eten. Vanaf dat moment leerde ik mensen ook iets beter kennen. Na die tijd hebben we nog even in China Town rondgelopen en daarna moesten we weer verzamelen bij de bus. ’s Middags gingen we naar Fishersman Warf waar ze het beroemde ‘sour dough bread’ hadden. En een geweldig uitzicht op de gevangenis “Alcatraz”. De hele middag daar geweest en ’s avonds hadden we dinner in een restaurant dat was langs het water. Na het eten zijn we naar de top van San Fransisco gereden waar je echt het meest fantastische uitzicht over de stad hebt! Het was al donker en je kon alle lichten zien inclusief die van de golden gate bridge! Echt geweldig! J

We moesten weer aanwezig zijn om 08:20 en we gingen in 2 kleine busjes op weg naar de Muir Woods. Het national park met de grootste bomen ter wereld. Erg cool om te zien! We zijn daar ongeveer een uur geweest en toen gingen we naar een kleiner plaatsje en hadden we een half uur vrije tijd. Iedereen ofcourse meteen naar de starbucks voor the daily cafeïne haha. Heb zoveel starbucks deze week gehad, maar goed. Na het half uur gingen we op een boot door San Fransisco en daar had je echt het mooiste uitzicht van de skyline. Na die tijd hadden we tijd om lunch te kopen en rond te lopen. Daarna gingen we met de bus nog langs een paar toeristische plekjes met uiteindelijk de Golden Gate Bridge! Echt zo gaaf om dat nu van dichtbij te zien!! Als afsluiter van de dag hadden we nog vrije tijd in down town San Fransisco. Shoppingg! Forever 21, urban outfitters, abercrombie, hollister, zara en noem maar op. ’s Avonds hadden we dinner in China Town in een chinees restaurant. En dit was dan ook onze laatste dag in San Fransisco.

On our way to Los Angeleeeeesss! 7 uur rijden, helaas. Verschrikkelijk lang. Maar gelukkig stopten we wel een aantal keren, o.a. voor in-n-out burger. Van alle fastfood restaurants in Amerika is dat absoluut de beste van allemaal! Ook stopten we in Santa Barbara waar we ons een uurtje zelf mochten vermaken. Dat was ook de eerste dag dat het echt mooi weer was, rond de 22 graden! Vanaf Santa Barbara was het nog ongeveer 2 uur rijden naar L.A. eenmaal in LA stopten we bij een shopping mall daar hadden we vrije tijd om wat te eten en nog te winkelen voor een uurtje. Daarna gingen we naar het hotel, gelukkig mochten we nu zelf de indeling van de kamers bepalen. Dus ik zat met 3 anderen. 2 Duitsers en een Zweed. Echt super veel lol gehad ofc.

De eerste dag in L.A. en wat ik meteen heb geleerd is; traffic in LA is HORRIBLE. De snelweg is ook wel genoemd “the moving parking lot” voordat we downtown waren was er wel een half uur voorbij. Maar goed, we kwamen uiteindelijk uit op de walk of fame. Met alle beroemde sterren op de grond etc. Erg leuk om te zien. We hadden 1,5 uur vrije tijd om te doen wat we wouden. Ze waren nog steeds aan het opruimen van de oscars haha dus dat was wel leuk om te zien. Verder hadden we nog een uitzicht op “The Hollywood sign”. Nadat we allemaal weer verzameld hadden gingen we terug naar de bus. En zijn we even op sightseeing gegaan en zijn we even langs Beverly Hills gereden waardoor we uiteindelijk uitkwamen op Rodeo Drive. Daar hadden we weer even vrije tijd. Erg leuk om te zien, hele dure winkel straat met op het einde het hotel uit de film ‘pretty woman’. Na rodeo drive zijn we naar The Grove gegaan, mega winkel centrum met ernaast de ‘farmers market’ waar alle bekende sterren hun eten ‘vers’ kopen. ’s Avonds hadden we dinner in 1 of ander modern restaurant in the grove. Daarna gingen we terug naar het hotel en hadden we tijd daar om te zwemmen etc.

de volgende dag gingen we om 9 uur weg naar Venice Beach. Daar hadden we een uur vrije tijd. Het was erg mooi weer maar het water was erg koud!! Na een uur rond te hebben gelopen gingen we weer terug naar de bus en gingen we naar Santa Monica waar we de rest van de middag vrije tijd hadden. Eerst met mensen sushi wezen eten en toen wezen shoppen. Aan het einde nog even op die pier gelopen en op het strand gelegen! ’s Avonds hadden we vrije tijd in het hotel.

De laatste dag gingen we naar Universal Studios. Echt super gaaf, je kon een studio tour doen waar je alle studio’s ziet waar films op worden genomen. En sets uit verschillende films, zoals de set van desperate housewives. De hele dag in het park geweest en alle attracties gehad. ’s Avonds hadden we dinner in het Hardrock Cafe, helaas ook ons laatste dinner. Na die tijd konden we nog even shoppen voor souvenirs en daarna weer naar de bus. Op het laatst hadden we besloten om toch nog even naar het hoogste punt in LA geweest. Mooi uitzicht over de hele stad met alle lichtjes!

Zaterdag, de dag dat we terug vlogen naar onze host families, dus voor mij weer terug naar Idaho. De meest depressieve dag van de hele week. Ik vloog gelukkig met 3 andere exchange students, uit zwitserland, spanje en duitsland. Mijn vlucht was om 13:00 en we waren met z’n allen op het vliegveld rond 10:00. Weer afscheid nemen van iedereen, dat is altijd het moeilijkste deel. Iedereen huilen haha, heel zielig. Grappig dat je in 1 week zoveel nieuwe vrienden kan maken. Heb nu iig friends all over europe! Ik kan zeker zeggen dat deze week echt 1 van de leukste weken van mijn exchange year is geweest! Zo gelachen met iedereen en na 7 maanden alleen maar Amerikanen was het echt zo leuk om met een groep mensen uit heel Europa te zijn, voelt toch iets meer als thuis en iedereen begrijpt je cultuur iets beter. En natuurlijk konden we met iedereen alle irritaties maar ook alle herkenbare en leuke dingen delen over the USA!
